Vinyasa
Sun Salutations (or Surya Namaskar) are a series of dynamic yoga poses that flow together, forming a sequence often practiced at the beginning of a yoga class to warm up the body. These movements are synchronized with the breath, creating a fluid, meditative experience. While there are several variations of Sun Salutations—such as Sun Salutation A, Sun Salutation B, or the modified variations for different skill levels—all of them share the same essential purpose: to wake up the body, focus the mind, and create an energetic flow.
In yoga, Vinyasa refers to the seamless connection of breath and movement. Each movement is paired with an inhale or exhale, turning your practice into a moving meditation. While Sun Salutations are one example of a Vinyasa flow, you’ll find that Vinyasa is often used in a broader sense to describe any yoga sequence where breath and movement are linked in harmony.
By practicing Sun Salutations, you not only stretch and strengthen your muscles but also cultivate mindfulness and awareness in the present moment. This practice is foundational to many styles of yoga and serves as a great way to center yourself before diving into deeper postures.
