How to Practice Mindfulness During Yoga

Practice What You Notice

During practice, it’s easy to focus on doing the pose “right.” But some of the most valuable parts of yoga aren’t visible from the outside.

Pay attention to everything that arises: the steadiness of your breath, the places you hold tension, the thoughts that repeat, and the emotions that appear unexpectedly. Notice when you want to rush, compare, resist, or give up. Notice moments of ease, curiosity, strength, and joy, too.

You don’t need to judge, fix, or fully understand what you discover. Simply noticing is the practice.

Over time, this awareness helps you recognize your patterns—not only on your mat, but in everyday life. The way you respond to discomfort, uncertainty, effort, or rest during practice can teach you something about how you meet those same experiences elsewhere.

So as you move and breathe, stay curious. Your body, thoughts, and feelings are always offering information. Practice paying attention.
